Coming back to the Same Things - Rodin

Most mornings for the last few months I have gone for an early morning walk around Stanford campus. They have great collection of sculpture scattered around campus. There is a collection of pieces by Rodin near the main art museum and a few other Rodin's near the main quad. I've always thought they were great -- most are slightly larger than human form (7ft+ human forms) and their material makes them feel particularly massive. You can touch, rub and grip the cool metal.

I've now seen these many mornings. My walk varies so I might approach them from different angles. There is also the light which is now changing as Fall approaches. The air is wetter so the dull metal shines. Seeing them differently and over and over brings them to life. It is a form of animation. Instead of taking 30 frames a second, you're mind takes one a day. Nonetheless the mind begins to animate them. This is something about art that we don't really get to experience. With songs we get to do this -- listen to them in many moods on many days. But we should do this with other art forms.
